How have your leadership responsibilities within NAWIC, at the chapter and regional levels prepared you to serve as the Region 2 Director

Ginger responds:

I have served on our chapter board as President, Vice President, Secretary and Director. I have chaired and served on many chapter committees and also served as a regional committee chair. By accepting these opportunities & challenges along the way, I have broadened my knowledge of NAWIC and enhanced my leadership skills.  By attending all regional events since joining NAWIC 6 years ago as well as attending the National Convention for the past 4 years, it has enabled me to see what others in the region are doing and given me the opportunity to meet great leaders in this organization. I feel that serving has helped my leadership qualities grow and I hope to continue to grow by serving as Region 2 Director if elected.

Stephanie responds:

When I first joined NAWIC, I heard the statement, “You get out of it what you put into it.” From that day, I have been actively involved in NAWIC on both the chapter and regional levels. Since joining in 2007, I have served on 12 Chapter committees, 10 of which I have chaired, as well as chairing 3 Regional committees and serving as Chapter President. I became a Board Director only 6 months into my membership and was asked the following year by seasoned members to consider running for President! By participating in such a wide variety of different committees, I have had the opportunity to quickly learn about NAWIC and what we have to offer. It also gave me the chance to get to know more members faster than just attending meetings. This gave me training in dealing with many different types of personalities, identifying member talents, learning how to diffuse conflicts and how to keep on top of things without micro managing. I believe that chairing Regional committees allowed me the opportunity to learn first hand what other chapters were working on; I was able to learn from them and share my ideas; therefore, building better relationships with more members at a quicker pace. Although I was able to meet many members while attending Regional functions, I don’t think I would have met as many or built as many relationships without these regional roles. I have demonstrated my leadership skills and willingness to help any member whenever I could on both the chapter and regional level sand I believe it has given our region a sample of my commitment to NAWIC and to our members. Serving as President last year gave me the leadership skills needed and confidence to seek out the Director position. I believe my willingness to assist other chapters shows that I could fulfill one of the key responsibilities of a Director - being able to remain neutral between the chapters.  In these few short years, I have discovered that you really do get out of it what you put into it.
